Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Economic Development in the Draghi government. In 2006, at 18, she was the youngest candidate for the City Council of Città di Castello with the civic list Centro Democratico. In 2008 she joined the Regional Secretariat of the Umbrian PD.

On February 5, 2011, she was elected Regional Spokesperson for the Democratiche Umbre and in November 2011 she organized the First National Forum of Female Administrators in Orvieto.

She took part in the parliamentary elections of 29 December 2012, obtaining 5463 votes in the Province of Perugia and coming third (first among women).

Thanks to this result she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the XVII legislature.

Her parliamentary activity is focused on education, school, culture, in particular from the point of view of innovation and development. During the XVII legislature, she was a member of the VII Commission (Culture, Science and Education) and president of the Intergroup of Young Parliamentarians. From 2014 to 2018, she was part of the Italian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and of the Women in Parliaments Global Forum. She promoted the first European Forum of Young Deputies, held in Brussels in December 2013. In January 2016, she was indicated by Forbes among the thirty most influential people under 30 in European politics

In July 2017, she was appointed to the National Executive of the Democratic Party as Head of the Culture Department.

She was a candidate in the 2018 political elections as head of the list for the Chamber of Deputies in Umbria for the Democratic Party and was again elected as a Member of Parliament in the XVIII legislature.

On March 17, 2019, she was chosen as Vice President of the Party, after participating in the Democratic Party Primaries.

On 13 September 2019, she was appointed Deputy Minister of Education, University and Research in the Conte II Government, with responsibility for school buildings, and on 10 January 2020, after the division of the Ministries of Education and University and Research, she became Deputy Minister of Education.
