Graduated in Political Science at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, professional journalist, he was the director of Nuova Ecologia, the Legambiente periodical. An expert in communications, in the 1990s he was the spokesperson for the then mayor of Rome Francesco Rutelli and then Councilor for Tourism and the Jubilee. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2001, first in the ranks of La Margherita and then in those of the Democratic Party, he was part of the Committee of the founders of the PD. He was President of the Rai Supervisory Commission (2005-2006) and Minister of Communications (2006-2008). From 31 October 2014 to 12 December 2016 he was Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Renzi government. On 11 December 2016, after Renzi’s resignation, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella gave him the task of forming a new government. In 2019 he was elected President of the Democratic Party, a position he held until 2020, and in September of the same year he was appointed by President-elect Ursula Von der Leyen as European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, a position he assumed on 1 December of the same year.
