He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 1991. He worked at IBM’s T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY, USA, from 1991 to 1996. In 1994, at the age of 33, he won the national competition for full professor, and returned to Italy as a full professor first at the University of Salerno and then at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. In 1997, he was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Informatik, Saarbruecken, Germany. In 1998 he is Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Hong Kong and in 2000 he is Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Columbia University. Since 1998 he has been Full Professor of Information Processing Systems (sector ING-INF/05) at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’.

From 2001 to 2007 he was on the Board of Directors of the Roma Research Consortium, where he worked on technology transfer to enterprises. He has helped to found various technology start-ups, including Wireless Lab Srl and TrustMyPhone Srl. He was also appointed Rector’s Delegate as Head of the training activities of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” at the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities for the Project Campus One. From 2002 to 2008 he was President of the Evaluation Unit of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. From 2004 to 2012 he was Director of the Department of Informatics, Systems and Production at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. Since 2013 he is the Delegate of the Rector of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” for Quality, Self-Assessment and Performance.

In 2005 he was elected to the Council of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS). In 2011 he was appointed a member of the Goedel Award Committee, which is responsible for awarding the prestigious Goedel Prize for “outstanding papers in theoretical computer science”. He is a member of the Editorial Board of various international scientific journals, has been invited to give presentations at many international conferences and has been invited to participate in the programme scientific committees (Program Committees) of numerous international conferences and conferences. He is the author or co-author of more than 250 scientific publications in prestigious international computer science journals and conferences, and has worked as an IT consultant for large international companies in Italy and the United States (AT&T, IBM, Lucent Bell Labs and Microsoft).
