We are now accepting applications from 30 trainee journalists registered with the National Journalists’ Association who will participate, with fifteen scholarships available, in the new two-year Master’s in Journalism and Multimedia Communication at Luiss Guido Carli. During the 2023–2025 cycle, selected students will complete journalistic internships recognized by the National Association and will be eligible to take the professional qualification exams for the National Register of Journalists. Upon completion of their studies and exams, candidates will also receive a European first-level university Master’s degree from Luiss.

Throughout the program, trainees will engage in two curricular internships totaling 4-6 months.

Teaching

The first-level Master’s in Journalism and Multimedia Communication at Luiss Guido Carli University provides highly professional training through an innovative program designed to meet current market demands. The two-year course includes over 3,000 hours (106 ECTS) of lectures, newsroom work, and internships, all focused on imparting real-world and strategic knowledge of the digital and multimedia landscape. The Master’s is recognized by the National Journalists’ Association and allows students not only to earn an additional academic qualification but also to take the professional state exam with high-level preparation. Selected candidates will have access to 15 scholarships, some of which cover the entire tuition fee, while additional scholarships are currently being funded

Data Journalism: insights

To qualify for the final exam, which consists of defending a Master’s thesis (or submitting a paper for the CdP), participants must complete at least 80% of classroom hours, successfully pass any intermediate tests, and complete all other activities required by the program.

The Call

There will be 30 candidates, both male and female journalists, participating in the third cycle of the Master’s in Journalism and Multimedia Communication at Luiss Guido Carli, chaired by Professor Livia De Giovanni and directed by Gianni Riotta. During the 2023-2025 cycle, selected candidates will complete their journalistic internships according to the regulations and guidelines of the Association, ultimately accessing the professional qualification exams for registration in the Professionals Register. At the same time, candidates will receive a first-level Master’s degree from Luiss upon completion of their studies and exams.

Courses, seminars, and workshops will train trainees in various media techniques, including newspapers, television, radio, web, and magazines, with experimental courses on data-driven journalism, podcasts, and new techniques in digital storytelling and video.

The innovative newsroom has been transformed into a digital experimental facility, featuring TV, radio, and web studios in a 24-hour streaming open space. Our courses have included media leaders such as Corrado Corradi (Gedi Group), Gina Nieri (Mediaset), Antonello Caporale (Il Fatto Quotidiano), Emiliano Fittipaldi (Domani), Mara Gergolet, Mario Sensini, and Antonella Baccaro (Corriere della Sera), Stefano Cappellini (La Repubblica), Lina Palmerini (Il Sole 24 Ore), Maria Corbi, Amedeo La Mattina, and Francesca Sforza (La Stampa). The newsroom of the winning candidates will produce and broadcast news and in-depth analyses on the geopolitical, cultural, and economic landscape, becoming part of a well-established community within the Master’s in Journalism and Multimedia Communication and Luiss Guido Carli University.

Participation Requirements

Eligible candidates for selection are those who:

  1. – Hold one of the following qualifications:
  • – A three-year degree as per D.M. 509/1999 and D.M. 270/2004, or a specialist degree as per D.M. 509/1999 or a master’s degree as per D.M. 270/2004, or a degree from the previous system (prior to D.M. 509/99).
  • – A foreign qualification comparable in level, nature, content, and academic rights to a first or second-level degree, and possess the original (or certified copy) of their final university qualification or a legally valid substitute certificate, Diploma Supplement, as well as the Declaration of Value or statement of comparability for the final university qualification issued by ENIC-NARIC centers.
  • – Meet the requirements set forth by Law No. 69 of February 3, 1963, for registration in the registry of interns;

The degree must be obtained by the academic year 2022/2023 (no later than the extraordinary session of spring 2024). Candidates who have not yet obtained the required degree at the time of application but have a confirmed date for their final discussion at their university may attach a signed letter from their thesis supervisor confirming the agreed-upon graduation date.
Participation in the selection process is conditional, under penalty of exclusion:

  • – On the payment, by no later than October 16, 2023, of the administrative fee of €150.00 (one hundred fifty euros) via bank transfer to: LUISS Guido Carli c/o Banca Intesa Sanpaolo, IBAN code IT37U0306905060100000300001, with the payment reference: Last Name and First Name of the candidate – Master Journalism 2023 selection.
  • – On completing the registration by depositing the application form for selection, downloadable from the website giornalismo.luiss.it, filled out and signed, at the School’s office (Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM) by the same date mentioned in point a).
  • – On completing, signing, and submitting the form for consent to the processing and protection of personal data as per European Regulation 2016/679.

In the latter case, only applications for which the candidate receives a receipt confirmation from the School’s office with the corresponding protocol number will be considered valid. Candidates must attach the following to their application for selection:

  1. – Degree certificate or self-certification as per D.P.R. No. 445/2000, in the latter case including the type of degree, the name of the university where it was obtained, the date of attainment, the final grade, and the classification of the degree.
  2. – If holding a foreign qualification, a degree certificate accompanied by a translation into Italian provided by the diplomatic representation and the declaration of value, Diploma Supplement, or statement of comparability of the final university qualification issued by ENIC-NARIC centers.
  3. Curriculum vitae et studiorum;
  4. – Certifications and attestations proving the possession of qualifications that may lead to additional points:
  • – Possible registration with the National Order of Journalists as a publicist, certified by an order certificate or complete photocopy of the membership card.
  • – An international certification attesting knowledge of foreign languages at least at level B2 issued by certifying bodies as identified by the MIUR Director’s decree of December 19, 2017.
  • – Possible final diploma from specialization and enhancement courses in subjects useful for the practice of journalism.
  1. – An essay, in journalistic style, of no more than 3,600 characters in length, illustrating the candidate’s choice of the journalism profession today.
  2. – A photocopy of a valid identity document.

Applications submitted by means other than those specified or sent to an address other than the one indicated above will be considered invalid. Applications received by the specified deadline will be considered submitted in time; the Master’s in Journalism and Multimedia Communication assumes no responsibility for delays or loss of communications due to incorrect or late indications from candidates or any postal issues attributable to third parties or force majeure.

The submission of the application for selection implies full knowledge and complete acceptance of the rules contained in this announcement and in the “Framework of Guidelines” approved by the National Council of the Order of Journalists on September 27, 2018.

 

Evaluation of Titles

According to Article 24 of the “Framework of Guidelines” for the authorization, regulation, and oversight of journalism training schools, candidates must take admission exams aimed at assessing their aptitude for journalistic activities. The exams consist of written and oral tests.

The examination committee will carry out an initial evaluation based on the qualifications submitted with the application and will assign each candidate a score expressed in sixtieths at its sole discretion, based on the following criteria:

– Degree grade (the scores for the two types of degrees are not cumulative):

– Any specialization and/or advanced training courses in subjects useful for practicing journalism: up to 10/60 points;

The scores from the above points will be added together, with a maximum score of 60/60 (sixty out of sixty).

Based on the total scores obtained, the examination committee will compile a ranking.

The ranking of candidates admitted to the written tests will be published by October 20, 2023, on the website giornalismo.luiss.it, and an email will be sent to all candidates to notify them accordingly.

All interested parties are encouraged to consult the website giornalismo.luiss.it to safeguard against any potential email malfunctions.

Admitted candidates must confirm their participation in the written tests by October 24, 2023, by sending an email to giornalismo@luiss.it. In the event that one or more candidates withdraw, meaning they fail to send the aforementioned confirmation email by the established deadline, the committee will proceed to replace them by inviting eligible candidates in order of the ranking; this communication will occur via email and will also be published on the website giornalismo.luiss.it

 

Contest

WRITTEN EXAMS

The written exams will take place on October 30, 2023, at one of the Luiss Guido Carli locations in Rome, which will be communicated via email. The exams will include:

  • – Writing an essay (a computer will be provided by Luiss) on a current journalistic topic (news, domestic or foreign politics, economics, culture, entertainment, sports, technology, or miscellaneous), from those selected at the discretion of the Examination Board. The article should not exceed 3,600 characters, including spaces (60 lines x 60 characters).
  • – Writing a summary of an extensive report, chosen and provided by the Examination Board. The summary should not exceed 900 characters, including spaces (15 lines x 60 characters).
  • – Multiple-choice quiz. Candidates must answer questions on topics of general knowledge (Contemporary History, History of Journalism, Right to Information, Constitution, Current Events, Politics, Economics, Science, Technology, Art, Literature, Sports).

Each individual written exam will be graded out of 60 points.

Candidates with an average score of at least 36/60 across all written exams will be admitted to the oral exams.

The list of those admitted to the oral exams will be communicated by November 3, 2023, via email and also published on the website giornalismo.luiss.it.
All interested parties, to avoid potential email issues, are encouraged to check the website giornalismo.luiss.it.

  1. Oral Exams

The oral exams will be held at one of the Luiss Guido Carli locations in Rome, which will be communicated via email, on the following dates:

  • November 8, 2023 – 9:00 AM: 20 candidates
  • November 9, 2023 – 9:00 AM: 20 candidates
  • – November 10, 2023 – 9:00 AM: remaining candidates

The oral exams consist of:

  • – An individual interview with the Examination Board members aimed at assessing the candidate’s knowledge and/or attention to the cultural, communicative, regulatory, technological, ethical, and deontological contexts in which today’s journalistic work takes place.
  • – An English proficiency test conducted by a native English-speaking instructor, with a particular focus on journalistic language.

Each individual oral exam will be graded out of 60 points.

Final ranking

For the final ranking, expressed out of 60 points, the scores obtained in each exam, both written and oral, will be weighted according to the following coefficients: 10% for the quiz; 30% for the essay; 15% for the summary; 35% for the oral interview; 10% for the English oral exam.

By November 15, 2023, the final ranking will be compiled, and up to a maximum of 30 students will be admitted to the Master’s program in ranking order, subject to the limitations of Article 22 of the “Framework of Guidelines” approved on September 27, 2018, by the National Council of the Italian Order of Journalists, which states, “the number of students admitted to the course cannot exceed half of those who completed the written exam.”
The list of admitted students, subject to the Examination Board’s final and binding decision, will be published on the website giornalismo.luiss.it.

 

Immatricolazione Master e Contributi

Pursuant to Article 142 of Consolidated Act No. 1592/1933, it is prohibited to enroll simultaneously in multiple university study programs: therefore, participants in the Master’s program covered by this call cannot be enrolled simultaneously in other Master’s programs, specialization schools, PhD programs, or undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The course start date is set for December 4, 2023, and the end date is scheduled for December 18, 2025. The sessions of the State examination for professional eligibility are legally scheduled for April and October.

The first three months of the two-year period are considered a probation period; at the end of this period, the Master’s Direction has the authority to make any justified exclusions, replacing those excluded with the next eligible candidates following the first 30 in ranking order.

During this same period and following the same procedures, the Direction will replace any admitted candidates who decide not to continue with the Master’s program.

Candidates admitted to the Master’s program must complete their enrollment by 12:00 PM on November 20, 2023, by submitting the following documentation to the Journalism Master’s Office (Viale Pola, 12 -00198 – Rome, office hours: Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM):

  • – Application for enrollment in the Master’s program, addressed to the Rector, completed on a form available at the School’s Office or downloadable online;
  • – Proof of payment of the first installment of the 2023/2025 academic fee.

Submission of all required administrative documentation, including proof of payment, is a mandatory condition for the acceptance and regularity of the enrollment itself.

The biennial fee for the Master’s program is set at €21,000 (twenty-one thousand euros), payable in six installments as outlined in the following table:

Attendance at the Master’s program is mandatory and full-time (an average of seven hours of work per day, five days a week). Absences exceeding 20% of the activity days each year will result in exclusion from the Master’s program (Article 6 of the “Framework of Guidelines”).

Attendance does not in any way imply an automatic job placement.

Payment of the installments is a mandatory condition for regular participation in the Master’s program, for attendance, for taking exams, and for the final diploma exam.

The Master’s in Journalism and Multimedia Communication Steering Committee has final and binding authority to decide on requests for withdrawal from the program. If accepted, the withdrawing student loses their student status, along with any academic progress made. If the student leaves the program after the first year, the Director is required to certify the internship completed.

The Master’s program lasts two years and is not subject to shortening or extensions. In case of withdrawal or failure to complete the two-year program, re-enrollment as a repeating student is not permitted. However, it is possible to reapply for admission in the next selection process.
