Since autumn 2002 Barbera is co-director of RING!, a film criticism festival held in Alessandria. In 2004 he took on the role of director of the National Museum of Cinema in Turin; in 2010 he was part of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival competition and at the end of 2011 he was again appointed artistic director of the Venice International Film Festival
